Has Your Business Outgrown Your Website? 7 Signs Your Website is Holding You Back

When a business starts to grow, something interesting happens.

You get busier. Your team expands. Your services shift. You start landing bigger clients. You gain more experience, and hopefully, your revenue increases too.

But there’s your website, just sitting there, still showcasing the business you were five years ago.

Sound familiar?

This happens more often than you'd think. The issue isn't always that the website looks bad. Sometimes, it looks just fine.

The real problem is that it no longer matches the calibre of the business it represents.

Here are seven signs your business might have outgrown its website.

1)  Your business has grown, but your website still makes you look small.

You've gained more experience, more skills, and bigger clients, but someone checking out your website wouldn’t know it.

That’s crucial, especially when you’re trying to win bigger contracts. Your website should assure potential clients that you can handle their needs.

2)  Your services have changed, but the website hasn’t.

Businesses change.

You add services, drop others, and specialise more. Yet, websites often get updated in bits and pieces until they no longer make sense as a whole. If people can't quickly grasp what you do now, it’s time for some updates.

You’re targeting bigger clients with a website built for smaller ones. This is a big deal.

3)  The website that helped you attract a £5,000 client might not help you win a £100,000 contract.

Bigger clients look for different things. Experience. Credibility. Proof. Expertise. Assurance that you understand their type of business.

If you’ve moved upmarket, your website needs to come along too.

4) Your best work is practically invisible.

You’ve completed amazing projects. Built up years of expertise. Received glowing testimonials. Solved some tough problems for your customers.

Where’s all that on your website?

A couple of old case studies and a testimonial from Dave back in 2019 are not doing you any justice.

Your website should show why someone should trust you with their business.

5)  People are visiting, but not enough are getting in touch

A website can look great and still be a flop commercially.

Visitors need to know where they are, what you offer, why they should choose you, and what to do next.

If you’re getting decent traffic but few good enquiries, something’s off.

And you need to figure out what that is.

6)  You're slightly embarrassed to send people to it

This is probably the easiest test.

You’re chatting with a fantastic potential client. They’re just the kind of company you want more of.

They ask for your website, and a little voice in your head goes...
“Oh no.”

If you’d rather send them your LinkedIn profile, a brochure, or anything but your website, we’ve found a problem.

You should feel proud to direct people there.

7)  Your competitors look better than you.

They might not actually be better.

But if their website shows off their expertise, highlights great work, answers the right questions, and makes them look professional and solid, that’s what your potential customers will see.

Sadly, they don’t know everything you know about your business. They can only judge by what they see.

So, has your business outgrown your website?

If you saw yourself in a few of these, don’t panic and rush to build a new one.

First, identify the real problem.

  • Is it the positioning?
  • The messaging?
  • The layout?
  • The calls to action?
  • Or has the whole thing just run its course?

That’s why we’ve launched our Website Growth Strategy Session at Everything Sorted.
